Welcome to The Skin Archive! I’m thrilled to share this space with you—where we can explore all things skin health together.
If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by skincare products or confused by ingredient labels, you're not alone. I’ve been there. That's why I created this blog. I want a resource where science meets simplicity—a space to break down how your skin works and what it needs so you can feel empowered to care for it.
Your skin is more than what you see in the mirror. It’s the body’s largest organ, working tirelessly to protect you, regulate temperature, and keep harmful bacteria out. Beneath its surface, there’s a whole world of activity. To understand how to care for your skin, let’s start with the basics.
The Wonders of Your Skin
Your skin is made up of three main layers: the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. The epidermis is the outermost layer and your first line of defense. It acts as a protective barrier, keeping harmful substances out while holding onto vital hydration. This layer is where skin cell turnover happens—a natural process in which your skin sheds dead cells and regenerates new ones.
On average, this process occurs every 28-40 days, but as we age, it slows down significantly, sometimes taking up to 60 days in our 50s. Slower turnover can lead to dullness, uneven texture, and clogged pores. This is especially prevalent with retention hyperkeratosis, where dead skin cells build up instead of shedding properly, resulting in acne. Gentle exfoliation and consistent care with the right products can keep this layer functioning at its best.
The Magic Beneath
Beneath the epidermis lies the dermis, where the real magic happens. This layer is responsible for your skin’s strength, elasticity, and ability to heal. It’s home to collagen and elastin—two proteins essential for keeping skin firm and youthful. However, collagen production begins to decline by 1% per year starting in your 20s. As elastin levels also decrease, you may notice fine lines, sagging, and wrinkles.
By your 40s, you may have lost 20-25% of your collagen reserves. Supporting this layer with ingredients like peptides, retinol, and antioxidants can slow the visible signs of aging and promote healthier skin.
Understanding Your Skin Barrier
It’s also crucial to remember that your skin is not just a sponge. Instead, it’s a carefully designed barrier made up of lipids (fats) that hold skin cells together like mortar between bricks. This barrier works hard to keep the good stuff (hydration) in and the bad stuff (irritants) out.
That’s why delivery systems in skincare products are so critical! Ingredients need to penetrate this skin barrier without damaging it and reach the dermis where they can actually make a difference. You may not see results after using products for a long period because they may not be actually penetrating into your skin. Sorry for the drama, but it’s true!
My Trusted Skincare Recommendations
When I recommend skincare products, I only suggest those that I personally trust. The products I highlight come from brands I’ve used and that have solid clinical studies to back them up. Some of these brands include iS Clinical, Glymed Plus Canada, Rejudicare, Colorescience, Hale Derma, and Clean Skin Club. Each brand has been carefully selected because they align with my values and deliver real results.
If you’re just starting out and don’t have a skincare routine, or if you face major skin concerns like acne, signs of aging, melasma, or hyperpigmentation, I recommend focusing on maintenance and prevention. Here’s a simple beginner routine of products to get you started:
Cleanser: Glymed Vitamin C Cleanser
Serum/Toner: Glymed CBD Spray and/or iS Clinical Super Serum Advanced +
Eye Cream: iS Clinical Youth Eye Complex
Moisturizer: iS Clinical Moisturizing Complex
SPF: Colorescience FLEX
Mask: Omnilux Contour Red Light Therapy
This is just a sample routine, and everyone’s skin is unique. That’s why I always recommend reaching out to a professional for a thorough intake. This helps determine the best skincare products for your specific skin type and concerns.
Skin-Loving Recipe of the Week
Alongside these products, nourishing your skin from within is just as important. I’m excited to introduce a Skin-Loving Recipe of the Week series—a simple way to support your skin from the inside out.
Coconut Milk Chia Seed Pudding
This week’s recipe is a Coconut Milk Chia Seed Pudding, packed with omega-3s and hydrating fats to help your skin glow.
Ingredients:
1 cup unsweetened coconut milk
3 tablespoons chia seeds
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1-2 teaspoons maple syrup or honey (optional)
Fresh fruit or toppings of your choice (e.g., berries, shredded coconut, nuts)
Instructions:
In a bowl or jar, combine the coconut milk, chia seeds, vanilla extract, and sweetener (if using).
Stir well to ensure the chia seeds are evenly distributed.
Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight to allow the pudding to thicken.
Before serving, give it a good stir and add your favorite toppings like fresh berries, a sprinkle of nuts, or shredded coconut.
Why It’s Skin-Loving:
Chia seeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which reduce inflammation and help maintain the skin barrier.
Coconut milk is hydrating and packed with healthy fats to nourish your skin from within.
Berries are loaded with antioxidants that fight free radicals and promote collagen production.
